Extension of Western Returned Scholars Association
The campus of the association is located in a district of historic center of Beijing, two blocks from the Forbidden City. The extension reconciles the architecture of the protected Pusheng Temple and others built later in the campus and creates a place to accommodate a gym, meeting rooms and offices. In the extremely limited site, the extension develops to underground to satisfy the requirements of large space. Working within the heritage of classical architecture, the design juxtaposed the respect for tradition with a distinctly modern vocabulary of concrete walls and the pitched roofs covered with metal grilling which diminishes the massing to tie the new building to its neighbors. The carefully designed plat roof is a result to improve the view from the nearby hotel.
A pair of vestibules anchors the front court and creates a series of spatial process in the former irregular space. They not only screen the massing of the extension from the street, but also provide a transitional space between the entry and the protected historic temple. Both the original Chinese and modern vocabularies are used to echo to their historic neighbors and emphasis the modern nature of the extension.
